    HISTORY
In 1846, a small natural harbour was discovered by Thomas Grace, a ship’s captain who immediately established a trading station. By 1852 the first eleven tons of copper ore was shipped from this harbour, now known as Hondeklip Bay, directly to Wales on board the Bosphorus.

Hondeklip Bay was declared as a separate magisterial district in 1862. From around 1980 until 2003 there was active diamond mining operations in the area and a lobster processing plant was once active in town.

A lighthouse was constructed here in 1936. 3 flashes is repeated every 15 seconds.

Just south of Hondeklip Bay lies the wreck of the 'Aristea'. Built in Scotland as a fishing vessel in 1934 and served as minesweeper during WW2. On July 4th 1945, on its maiden voyage as trawler, it ran aground with the loss of one life.

    ORIGINS OF THE NAME
Named after a 5m tall rock that resembles a seated dog, until its head was struck off by lightning.
The Afrikaans "Hondeklip" directly translate to 'Dog Stone'
