AIS / RICHTERSVELD TRANSFRONTIER NATIONAL PARK
HOW TO GET THERE (GPS: 28 07S 16 54E) Near the North-Western corner of the country. Follow the clearly signposted road from Alexander Bay. DETAIL Managed jointly by the local Nama people and the South African National Parks, this is a harsh and unpredictable land where water is scarce and life-sustaining moisture comes in the form of early morning fog. A vast mountain desert that is the Ai-Ais/Richtersveld National Park and cover an area situated across the border with Namibia, incorporating the Fish River canyon. An amazing assortment of plant life, mainly succulants, some species occurring nowhere else, is to be found here. The park is negotiable by means of a vehicle with high clearance such as a LDV and heavy duty tyres are advised. 4x4 required for a section along the Orange River.
